On Astrology, Awareness and Change
One of the main reasons why I’m drawn to Astrology is that it provides me a lot of self-awareness. It offers distinctions that explain why I am the way I am: what drives me, blocks me etc. It gives me an understanding of who I am and allows me to act consciously.
Many of my clients have also said the same thing: that my Astrological work articulates their current issues and concerns- which is particularly beneficial and powerful for them.
The problem however, really begins when awareness becomes the be-all and end-all. In fact, this is a common issue with learners who are in the beginning stage of learning the various profiling tools (eg. Astrology, Human Design etc). “I am like this because my chart says so.” What then happens is that they start to use the chart as a way to explain their various tendencies and behaviours. I am definitely very guilty of this myself.
I’d like to qualify that this is ‘not wrong’. It only becomes problematic when one desires to create new results in their lives.
Results are created by actions, and actions are performed by the individuals, seeing the world and themselves in a very specific way. When I hold on to certain behaviours because “my chart says I’m like that”, I am likely to keep doing the same thing- same actions- which will most definitely produce the same result over and over again. And then the suffering persists.
In my journey as a practitioner, I’ve met many fellow journeymen who take courses after courses in search of the Holy Grail. I have no doubt that they deepen their own intrapersonal awareness and understand themselves more and more with each course they took. Whether anything significantly changes for them is another matter altogether.
So here’s a big question: How can we go beyond having awareness and actually create change in our lives? Below is a formula for change introduced to me by my partner (who is a Coach) which I think can shed some light:
Awareness X New Habits = Change
Awareness, alone, isn’t going to create change. Practising new habits, in light of the awareness, will. If you are always hard on yourself- start acknowledging favourable results you have created. If you are prone to discontent and unhappiness- start a daily practice of writing three things you are grateful about. No amount of awareness (or Astrology) is going to create the change you desire if you don’t practise anything new.
I’d close this post with this question: What meaningful new habits can you inculcate today that would be a gamechanger for you?
