Cultivating New Habits to Create New Results

Why is this important?

Awareness X New Habits = Change

While an astrological reading does provide us with new awareness, it doesn’t guarantee change and transformation. Only when we practice new habits can we then create new and unprecedented results and have the change we’d like to see.

Identity-Based Habits

The actions you take and the habits that you have do impact the results and outcomes you get. However, if your actions/habits are not congruent with your identity– beliefs, worldview, self-image- it is much harder to practice them. Here’s an example:

Alfred wants to pass his exams. If he fundamentally believes that he isn’t someone who can pass them, it is less likely for him to sustain any studying habits since the passing result is beyond his beliefs about himself (his identity).

Hence, when creating new habits, focus more on the identity than the results you’re trying to get. Instead of “What do I want to achieve?”, ask:

Who is the person that I’d like to become?

Some Examples…

With the goals that you have, ask: what kind of person achieves that goal and create habits to become that person.

Results that I want: Lose weight

Identity: Become the type of person who exercises

Habits: Start exercising 5 minutes a day.

Results that I want: Read more books

Identity: Become the type of person who reads

Habits: Read for 5 minutes a day.

Results that I want: To better manage my anger

Identity: Become the type of person that is calm and less riled up.

Habits: Meditate for 5 minutes every day.

Know that every single time you practice the habit, you are 1% closer to the person you’d like to be.

4 key pillars of creating new habits: Make it obvious

Little cues matter. You can help to foster a new habit by making the cues more obvious so that the habits are more available to you.

Want to drink more water throughout the day? Have a glass of water next to you at all times.

Want to meditate more? Schedule it on your calendar so you won’t miss it.

In some way, this is about designing your environment to make the new habits more accessible. It is far more powerful to ‘hack’ your environment than relying on internal motivation.

4 key pillars of creating new habits: Make it simple

When creating a new habit: start small, start simple.

Especially in the early stages of habit creation, consistency is more important than excellence. Do small things which facilitate that.

Instead of going to the gym for 2 hours from the get-go, start with 15 minutes of exercise.

Instead of writing a full-page entry for your journal daily, start with writing 3 sentences each day.

You can always scale it up or improve later once you get the hang of it.

4 key pillars of creating new habits: Make it attractive

We need to make our habits attractive because it is the expectation of a rewarding experience that motivates us to act in the first place.

One way to do this is the bundle a habit you’re trying to cultivate with something that gives you pleasure and fun.

If you hate exercising but love socialising: Set up a gym date with a friend.

If you hate reading but love wine: Only drink when you’re reading.

Don’t underestimate the power of peer pressure as well. Hanging out with like-minded people gives you more incentive to practice that particular habit you’re trying to cultivate.

4 key pillars of creating new habits: Make it satisfying

From ‘Atomic Habits’: “What is immediately rewarded is repeated.”

At the beginning of building any habits, you’d need a reason to stay on track. Give yourself a reward each time you finish that habit.

Give yourself some Xbox time after you wash the dishes.

Watch your favorite TV show after you exercise as a reward.

The hope is that, in the long run, the action itself becomes the reward as you start seeing the results. And that you do the actions because it is now coherent to the new identity you’re becoming.
