Understanding Venus in your Natal Chart

We are still in Venus Retrograde season. With Venus conjoining the Sun yesterday, turning the celebrated ‘morning star’ to ‘evening star’, you can expect any current difficult matters aroused by this retrograde season to come to a resolution.

Importance of Venus

Everyone knows and understands the significance of their Sun Sign. The Sun Sign is also colloquially known as the ‘Zodiac’ or ‘Zodiac Sign’ or ‘Horoscope’. Far too often, the Sun Sign has been used by fashion and beauty magazines as the ‘be-all-and-end-all’ of a person’s life. We are all too well-acquainted with the attempts of Astrology columns dividing the world’s population into twelve signs, as though “an old flame would be rekindled” for one-twelfth of the world’s population.

This is not to say that there is no value in Sun Sign Astrology. There is a time and place for it, especially if we are looking to understand one’s sense of purpose and meaning. In the context of romance and relationships however, it is the sign of Venus that is more relevant and useful.

So here’s a quick run-through of how Venus behaves in each sign, and what that means for you in the context of romance and relationships. You can find out your Venus Sign in the chart generator on the sidebar of my homepage.

Venus in the Signs

Venus in Aries

When it comes to relationship building, people with Venus in Aries cares less about the ‘building’ and more about the ‘relationship’. Not only do they love fiercely, they also love quickly and sometimes that means that there’s little to no lasting power in the relationship.

The principle of Venus is to ‘attract’ and not to ‘do’, but Venus in Aries natives are too impatient to wait around and you can expect them to do the courting rather than allowing themselves to be courted.

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Aries is: forceful, demanding, pushy.

Venus in Taurus

Natives with Venus in Taurus tends to be quite placid when it comes to relationship. They generally know their worth and they have no qualms about waiting for the right person to come by.

Relationships and romances tend to be practical, grounded and steady. There is a stubbornness and fixity to this position which makes Venus in Taurus individuals more likely to stay in a relationship that works rather than looking for options (as opposed to Venus in Gemini).

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Taurus is: steady, practical, sensuous.

Venus in Gemini

Singapore’s very own Joseph Schooling has Venus in Gemini.

Venus in Gemini individuals tend to flirty. They love word puns and wordplay and absolutely love the intrigued and thrill of verbal suggestion of sex and intimacy. For them, the mind is always sexier than the genitals. Relationship is always about communication for the Venus in Geminis, so Words of Affirmation is their natural love language.

Because they get bored easily, a Venus in Gemini relationship can be fickle, especially in the younger days. It therefore becomes important to keep the relationship interesting.

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Gemini is: communicative, stimulating, verbal.

Venus in Cancer

The 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, has Venus in Cancer in the 5th House.

Venus in Cancer individuals approach relationship with sentimentality and familiarity. They can be quite clingy and they love a relationship that can nourish, nurture and support them, just as how they’d be loving, supportive and nurturing to those they love.

They love hugs and baby talks and enjoy the emotional safety relationships can provide.

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Cancer is: risk-aversed, sentimental, nurturing.

Venus in Leo

In the dazzling sign of Leo, Venus is both generous and dramatic. Love is a declaration, and you can expect Venus in Leo individuals to be extremely demonstrative when they show(er) love. Expect grand gestures of flowers and gifts.

The downside of the drama is… the drama. Because everything is so larger than life, any rejection or disagreement to a Venus in Leo would feel like a personal attack and can result in argument and quarrel.

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Leo is: loyal, demonstrative, larger-than-life.

Venus in Virgo

Liu Yi Fei, actress of Mulan, has Venus in Virgo

The upside of a Venus in Virgo relationship is that it is clean, fuss-free and very service-oriented. Their natural love language is Acts of Service and they love a wholesome relationship build on improvement and bettering each other.

The downside? Fussy, picky and perfectionist. Venus in Virgos individuals can find themselves in meddlesome relationship in which the partner tries to fix them and their lives without permission, or they can be the one always looking for problems to solve and troubleshoot.

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Virgo is: service-oriented, perfectionistic, wholesome.

Venus in Libra

Adam Samberg who acted in popular NBC series Brooklyn 99, has Venus in Libra in the 1st House.

Libra is the sign in which Venus rules, so people with Venus in Libra really understand what relationships are about: compromise, fairness, give-and-take.

The Venus in Libra relationship is loving, pleasing, and nice. Of course, there is a superficial element to it, but ultimately, the Venus in Libra native really knows and understands what the partner wants and needs. They strive to give in accommodate their partner to the best of their abilities. However, it can be problematic when they choose the harmony of the relationship over their own interest and needs, especially if they are paired with selfish partners.

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Libra is: accommodating, compromising, pleasing

Venus in Scorpio

Actor Bruce Lee has Venus in Scorpio in the 12th House.

Venus in Scorpio does not go into a relationship lightly. Scorpio is a sign of depth and the underworld, so natives with Venus in Scorpio only enter a relationship when they trust the other person.

So yes, Venus in Scorpios are extremely loyal when it comes to relationships. However, they are also incredibly suspicious and they have no qualms about throwing a few curve balls to test if the relationship can hold on its own. In some way, they may seek its destruction even before it can really begin.

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Scorpio is: suspicious, loyal, deep.

Venus in Sagittarius

The general advice I’d give to people with Venus in Sagittarius is to check your expectations. Venus in Sagittarius individuals expect a lot from a relationship: they want it to be fun, joyful and constantly growing. This also means that they can be quite restless because they are unwilling to simply ‘settle’.

They value honesty and truths in relationships and does not take too well to lying and cheating. They also love a relationship with constant learning and wisdom, so it is possible that they choose a partner quite different from who they are.

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Sagittarius is: growth-oriented, optimistic, restless.

Venus in Capricorn

Cultural Icon James Dean has Venus in Capricorn in the 9th House.

I would say that if you have Venus in this placement, you are pretty ‘old-school’ when it comes to partnerships and romances. You aim to settle down and get married, so you don’t enter into a relationship unless you are certain that you are going for the long haul.

The modus operandi of the Venus in Capricorn individual is to commit. They are likely to put in the work to make a relationship work, but they are also likely to trap themselves in relationships that do not work for the sake of that commitment.

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Capricorn is: committing, hardworking, traditional.

Venus in Aquarius

With Venus in the position of Aquarius, the line between friends and lovers is not immediately clear. Freedom is very important for individuals with Venus here, so they can be detached and aloof. It is also possible that they may not be willing to abide by traditional rules of relationships (as opposed to their Venus in Capricorn friends) so they may choose a partner that is unconventional, or one which offers unconventional partnerships (eg. Open relationship, polygamy, civil partnerships, co-habiting etc).

And they love humor. Jokes, laughter, silliness is an important hallmark of their romances.

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Aquarius is: friendly, funny, freedom-loving.

Venus in Pisces

Pisces is a sign of compassion and spirituality, so individuals with Venus placement here inject a lot of that unconditionality into their relationships. In some way, they love without expectations but they also allow themselves to be a martyr of their love.

Love and romances happen in a state of surrender for the Venus in Pisces natives, so they can be quite unrealistic when it comes to romances: they want to be swept off their feet and may not be immediately clear of the boundaries of their relationships. If not careful, they can be lead to believe that they are in a relationship and which turns out to be one-sided.

When it comes to relationships, Venus in Pisces is: romantic, unconditional, idealising.
